Why this Innovation is Important
Remote monitoring makes it easier for us to obtain accurate and timely information related to the operational performance of our Safe Water Stations in real time by collecting data automatically generated by the station’s treatment system—removing human error in data collection and providing a comprehensive suite of technical data more frequently. This data is then given to trained operators and managers who can take action on potentially problematic situations.
Progress to Date
Our Safe Water Stations in India use reverse osmosis treatment technology, and this type of system must be monitored carefully to run efficiently. We developed a remote monitoring system to capture real-time data on 21 operational criteria for each site. This data is then stored on a digital cloud through telecom connections. The information is made available to our field partners and staff via the Internet to ensure that these systems are providing reliable, safe water.
While our Ghana team does not currently run automated remote monitoring systems at the stations, they use SMS text messaging between operators and managers to deliver key data about the stations’ operations to ensure their systems are running properly.
How this Contributes to the Long-term Success of our Model
Collecting and evaluating real-time and accurate operational information about a Safe Water Station will become more important as we take this model to scale, to ensure the sustainability of each station. Remote monitoring puts the information in the right hands at the right time to maintain quality and reliability. With hundreds of stations operational in the field, remote monitoring provides an essential tool for the ongoing service and maintenance support structure needed to keep safe water flowing.
We are exploring ways to further reduce station operating costs and improve both the reliability and durability of the sensors installed in our Safe Water Stations. A business analytics platform is also in development to distill the data in useful ways, making it easier and more efficient for decision makers to deploy resources and keep systems running smoothly.
